Profile
The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. The hexagonal panelled main dining room with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires serves sumptuous heritage classics, from pavé of halibut with white onion risotto to roast local pheasant with Jerusalem artichokes, chestnuts and pancetta. There are two smaller dining rooms for private functions, plus hearty roasts on Sundays and a well-chosen drinks list which includes wine from the castle's own 500-year-old vineyard.
